History at Large
is an Arts project based in Salisbury, Wiltshire. It was created in January 1997 by George Fleming and Sue Paramor, with the
aim of exploiting the enormous potential of history as a source of intelligent and informative entertainment. A History at Large production offers its audience the unusual experience of an evening at the theatre, actually enjoying a history lesson! We do not confine ourselves to any one format of presentation. Our theatre productions can be "live documentaries", plays, musicals, or even variety shows! But, whatever the method, the history is always as factually accurate and unbiased as serious research and writing can make it. We are not in the business of adapting it to suit the political and social fancies of the moment. And we do try to limit our use of dramatic licence to the minimum necessary to cope with the practical problems of staging and of making history "live" for an audience in the theatre. But History at Large is not only a theatre company, and its activities are not confined to the Salisbury area. Our Collateral Activities include illustrated lectures and presentations, including lectures and lessons for schools, collaboration with history re-enactment groups, and the provision of scripts to other theatre companies and drama groups.
